Laichling solo playthrough

Here are a few photos of a solo game of Laichling 1809, adapted to General d'Armee from the Michael Hopper scenario.

The French right, some newly painted Bavarians.

 And the centre.

Austrian cavalry confront the advancing Bavarians.

From behind the Austrian right.

Looking south along the Austrian lines. Opposing skirmishers begin the duel for the woods.

On the other side of the valley, brigades Gilly and Loencez.

Austrian chevauleger charge the Bavarians.

The following four pics show the overall positions at this point.

Austrian chevauleger break one infantry battalion and drive back the Bavarian cavalry.

Austrian left looking secure for the moment.

I played about 14 turns. The scenario gives the game 12 turns using the Shako ruleset. I suspect that for GdA that could be increased by as much as 50%. Instead of having reserve formations arriving at the times specified, I treated them as "off table reserves".
The French managed to occupy both Laichlings on turn 14, a points victory. Until then it looked as if they had no chance, with many battalions weakened from the fire of the numerous Austrian artillery.

  1. Great looking game John.
Were you using the smoke to denote fire discipline, or purely for added effect to the photos? If the former, it seems to have been happening a lot, if the latter, it had the desired effect for it looks great!

  2. On the infantry it is for fire discipline. Artillery receive fatigue casualties for poor dice rolling. If you go blasting away at everything, no matter how small the chances are of hitting, you increase the chances of this happening. Loss of fire discipline effectively only restricts movement as you will recover in your next movement phase (by remaining stationary), which is before firing.

    1. So... the smoke was fire discipline for the infantry and purely for the camera for the guns?! :)
